Mary and Martha summon Jesus to come quickly to Bethany, because beloved Lazarus has fallen ill.  Jesus delays and Lazarus dies.  By the time Jesus arrives at the sisters’ home, Lazarus has been in the tomb for four days.  Both sisters reproach Jesus.  Jesus says:  “I am the Resurrection and the Life.  Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.”   Jesus weeps, and then goes to the tomb and calls out, “Lazarus, come out!”  And the dead man comes out.

What are we to make of this?  The Gospel tells us that for many of the 1st century on-lookers, this was a transformative experience.  But what about for us, 2,000 years later?  We have never seen anyone who was truly dead for four days rise from the grave and resume living. Are we to take this on faith as proof that Jesus is Lord, and will that lead to a lifetime of following Jesus? Could this story be rich with resonance for each one of us today, as we and our loved ones journey through life?  This Sunday, March 22, 2015, at 9:30 a.m., we’ll explore how love calls us back to life from grief, loss, betrayal, and disappointment. And we’ll see how we might be called to this ministry of love!
